Reinard Earns First in State Writing Contest

Every year Barker High School art students participate in the creative writing contest sponsored by Avon Study Club and the Western New York Federation of Women's Clubs. Students write a story or poem and illustrate their writing. Congratulations to Areanna Reinard on her poem, “Iridescent Sea,” winning first place for Poetry in the Western New York Federation of Women’s Clubs Greater Western District Creative Writing Contest. From there, her poem was judged by the New York State Federation of Women’s Clubs at the state level, where it won first place again.

The inspiration for Areanna’s creative writing was the view out the window of her plane, which she captured in a photograph she took. She also received an award for that same photo. Areanna said, “I was on a plane coming home from Mexico and I really liked how the lights of the cities we were passing by looked from above in the dark.” Areanna is also the recipient of the Wanda Odrobina Award for Excellence in Creative Writing, an award named in honor of the former Director of the Greater Western District, a very creative member of the Federation.

Karen Davis, member and president of the local Avon Study Club said, “In the twenty five years that I have been working to get student writing to the competition, three Barker students have won this award. The Wanda Odrobina Award is only given to one individual a year and some years it is not awarded at all.”

Areanna wrote her poem and digitally combined it with her photography in Ms. Feltz’s high school art class.
